French-Canadian Family History Research- "The impact of the Fur Trading to family lineage and the Michif culture"
Evelyn Landis; Family Genealogist, former teacher. National President of American Agri-Women, organizer of North Dakota Agri-Women, served on ND Commission for the Status of Women and an ATAC Advisor to the Foreign Aguiculture Service under Pres. Carter, to name only a few occupations. She will bring to us her personal "addiction" and love for family research of her people, the French-Canadian heritage and the Michif (Meti) culture. She will share, through firsthand experience, the tools needed to find lines back to Quebec; the fur trading migration patterns and difficult naming systems. She admits becoming very cognizant of the 42 ethnicities that came through her classroom while teaching ESL and Science in Houston, Texas, and the struggles her students had to keep their identity and culture alive while still fitting into the western civilization. Although always proud of her family heritage, after returning to her home in Grand Forks she became fascinated with identifying her ancestors, and continues the process of researching her personal family lineage with their history. Her family quilt hangs in the Library at UND today as a symbol of the love for her cultural heritage. Contact information: |
