Going Beyond Researching
Many people think that family history is just gathering records and documenting their ancestors. While this is certainly a large part of family history, it certainly isn't all. There are many other ways that you can help if researching isn't quite your thing. While there are many different areas in which you can explore to do this, we hope this list will help give you ideas as to what is available.
Indexing- "Giving Back to the Community"
Indexing is a worldwide efforts led by people just like you. It is simple, fast, and can be done right from home. When you are indexing, you are simply looking at an image of a record and typing out what it says. Doing this makes it possible for various websites and search engines to reference the records that were only unlabeled pictures before. Every record that you can currently find has been indexed by others to make it available to you. You can get a start for doing this amazing work at https://familysearch.org/volunteer/indexing.
Help Others With Your Insight
Who better to help someone learn about your area and the changes that have occurred than someone that resides there? You could be the key to help a distant researcher come to know his or her ancestors by feeling part of the community they lived in. The knowledge you share could include first hand knowledge of changes in your home town or anything that you have learned while researching for your ancestors. Each and every fact that you learn could be very important to someone who comes after you while searching. You can also help correct others accounts if you find a flaw in them to help make them more accurate and complete. You simply need to share, you don't need to be an expert historian to be an expert on your home.
